Soni’s to get revamp

Newtown tapas bar Soni’s has changed hands and will close for renovations following last drinks on Saturday, February 11.

Soni’s was named for its founding owner, Sonia Marra Nicholson (pictured), who died in a helicopter crash in New York last October while on a sightseeing flight with her partner Helen Tamaki, mother Harriet Nicholson, and stepfather Paul Nicholson.

Tamaki and Harriet Nicholson later died in hospital as a result of their injuries.

Opened in 2004, the venue was known for its original cocktails and movie screening nights, as was another of Nicholson’s ventures, Madam Fling Flong’s, Newtown’s first small bar.

New proprietors Matt Kennedy and Chris Bell will relaunch the venue in late February with a new look and said they hoped to retain the atmosphere of friendliness Nicholson had instilled.

“While we’re very excited to be introducing a completely new look and feel to the place, including a renovation and a revamped menu, we hope to retain a lot of the warmth and hospitality that Soni’s was renowned for,” Kennedy said.
