All aboard for equality

Melbourne commuters will be hit with an anti-homophobia message on a billlboard at Richmond train station from March 26.

Evan Cooper is set to get Melburnians thinking about what it means to be in a same-sex couple as he promotes The Commitment Project, a photographic work featuring queer, gay and lesbian couples who have been in a committed relationship for 8.8 years — the median length of an Australian marriage — or longer.

Cooper said he hopes the billboard will challenge people’s views.

“It’s to show the diversity of our community and to make people see we’re from all different backgrounds and to think, why is there homophobia, what’s the opposition to gay marriage about?

“It’s about equality.”

Cooper is looking for more committed same-sex couples in long-term relationships to join the campaign.

The Star Observer is a sponsor of the billboard.
