Anti-marriage forces unite in Tasmania

Anti-marriage equality supporters will join forces in Hobart tomorrow for what’s being sold as a “national family event” called Excellent Marriage.

Held at the University of Tasmania, Excellent Marriage is being hosted by Tasmanian churches and is supported by the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL), FamilyVoice Australia and Dads4Kids amongst others.

Its call to arms on the event website says the evening of guest speakers aim to celebrate “the importance and value of marriage for the Australian community”.

No official speakers are listed on the website and the event’s Facebook page appears to have been taken down.

Last year, 100 pro-gay marriage protesters attended a vigil outside a similar event called ‘Save Marriage’ at the University of Tasmania, with speakers including ACL’s Jim Wallace, Liberal senator Guy Barnett and Dr Andrew Corbett from the Tasmanian Family Institute.

Marriage equality advocates have vowed to stage a similar vigil outside tomorrow’s event.

Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesman Rodney Croome called on Tasmanians to take part in the protest.

“The theme of our vigil will be ‘Equally Excellent’ because we want to remind those attending the meeting that whether or not a marriage is ‘excellent’ has nothing to do with the gender of the partners involved,” Croome said.

“Our presence will be a peaceful reminder to those attending that if they truly value marriage they will support extending it to include same-sex couples and their families.”

  1. @Family but the Marriage Act does not recognize your interpretation of the Bible as it is. It allows Civil Marriages and Buddhist Marriages. It is not based on the couple going to Heaven.
No, this is about your wish to impose a Religious State. You are having conflict because you are attacking the religious freedoms of others, including the majority of Christians who the polls show, over and over, support marriage equality in the law for same-sex couples.

The Catholic Church, only recognize a Catholic wedding, not someone divorced 8 times who wants an Anglican wedding. You will have to go to Anglican Church for that wedding. What you are offering is the approach of Hitler, no freedom, and everyone lives by his Catholic beliefs, which clearly the majority of Catholics did not share.

  2. This event is a celebration of marriage as defined in a Christian context: “A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh” Gen 2:24. This is the definition of marriage that married couples (like us) want to protect .

  3. Only going to Tasmania because they think they will be safe to have their National family event. As we would give them hell.

Hope the Tasmanian gays protest hard outside.

  4. Catholic Bishops and lunatic Christian cults are uniting to make lamingtons with cow manure. They are violating the fundamental right of all people- that they can choose their faith freely or have no faith at all. They are trying to impose a religious state few Australians agree with. Now I like Lamingtons, like the majority of Christians who support marriage equality, but demanding Australians swallow lamingtons with the smell of manure is always going to create a riot.

  5. Has anyone thought about examining whether the League of Rights and other neofascist and right wing extremist groups are distributing propaganda against LGBT rights and same-sex marriage and then exposing them? And seeing if they’re publicising this conference?
