Barney Frank to marry

Retiring Democratic Congressman Barney Frank will marry his longtime partner Jim Ready at a ceremony in Massachusetts, a spokesman told media last week.

Frank is the first openly gay member of Congress to announce his intention to marry a same-sex partner while in office.

Elected in 1980, Frank came out as gay in 1987, making himself the first member of Congress to voluntarily do so.

The founder of the LGBT Democratic organisation the National Stonewall Democrats, Frank has been a consistent civil rights advocate, helping remove sexual preference exclusions from immigration law, co-sponsoring a bill to extend benefits to domestic partners of federal employees and another to amend the US constitution to apply equal rights based on gender differences.

The 71-year-old announced last year that he would retire at the end of his term.

He and 42-year-old Ready have been together since 2007 after meeting at a fundraiser in Maine two years earlier.

Frank told USA Today they have set a July wedding date.
