Everett’s gay life whitewashed?

British comedian and entertainer Kenny Everett, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1995 aged 50, will be the subject of a 90-minute BBC biopic to screen later this year. But it’s already stirring controversy as the BBC have announced that the biopic, titled The Best Possible Taste, will focus on the performer’s relationship with his wife, singer Lee Middleton.

The pair married in 1966 and seperated by 1979, with Everett later coming out as gay and being a vocal proponent of gay rights – an area of his life not mentioned in the BBC’s announcement of the film.

The television movie is currently filming in London, so no word as yet on an Australian screening date – in the meantime, let’s revisit some of Everett’s best-loved work.

  1. This is a shame, as the BBC have produced some very good gay stuff in the past. Could this be driven by commercial imperatives (ie. appeal to the widest audiences) being forced down by the current government?
