McKellen to return as Gandalf

Global gay activist Sir Ian McKellen has signed on to reprise his Oscar-nominated role as Gandalf the wizard in the two part Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit.

There has been some speculation about the openly gay actor’s involvement in the film.

The blockbuster has been in development for several years with different directors attached to the film – first critically acclaimed arthouse darling Guillermo del Toro and now Peter Jackson, the man behind the first three Lord Of The Rings movies.

The Hobbit has finally been given the green light since moving from MGM to New Line and Warner Bros.

In addition to McKellen, several other actors from the trilogy have signed on to reprise their roles including Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and Andy Serkis.

Filming of the eagerly anticipated prequel begins in February.
