Veteran actor Christopher Plummer’s role as a father coming to terms with his sexuality in Beginners has seen him nab one of the Oscar nominations announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles yesterday.

Meryl Streep landed her 17th Oscar nomination for The Iron Lady alongside Glenn Close for her gender-bending role in Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis for The Help, Rooney Mara for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn.

There are nine contenders for Best Picture this year. They include Hugo, The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War Horse.
