Speedos, drugs and misogyny “a huge problem” among gay men: Charmed star

SPEEDOS, drugs and misogyny is how one star of cult TV show Chamed, Rose McGowan, views the gay culture, according to a recent interview.
McGowan, who played Paige Matthews between 2001-2006 of the series’ run, also claimed that gay men were more misogynistic than straight men.
In an interview on the Bret Easton Ellis Podcast (audio below), McGowan — who at one point in her childhood lived with drag queens — said that gay misogyny “is a huge problem”.
She also expressed that the gay community was on the cusp of having all that they had set out to fight for, but won’t extend their hand to help others’ struggles, especially women.
“You want to talk about how nobody in the gay community, no gay male, standing up for women on any level?” she said.
“I see no help and I see no paying it forward.
“I have a huge problem with a community that understands what it’s like to be looked down on for existing… I see no extending the hand outside of the gay community.”
She added that women had “very much helped the gay community get to where they are today”.
“Look at Stonewall. Stonewall was fought on the backs of transvestites, drag queens and women,” she said.
McGowan went on to say that the gay community should help others who are fighting for human rights as their new movement rather than “people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange speedo and take molly [MDMA]”.
Do you agree with Rose McGowan’s thoughts? Listen to the interview and comment below.
So this Hollywood celebrity has met every gay man on the planet and can speak for them unequivocally? Didn’t think so. Whats the bet half of the guys that have submitted comments agreeing with McGowan are straight homophobes lol.
I’m with Rose on this one. No longer mix in public gay venues because I got really pished off with my women freinds (lesbian/bi/straight) being kicked as they walked by.
Minorities exist in every group! Who is she to make such a brash statement with no evidence! Just disgusting #reallyqueen
She’s been drinking her own bathwater.
Also, Why always the outrage and self victimising every time anybody says anything about the gay “community” that’s not PR friendly? Of course she’s making a GENERALISATION, to point that out is completely meaningless. I wished she hadn’t apologised, because although her expression was somewhat problematic, she made a perfectly legitimate point. There should be room for her to say what she said. The cannibalisation of any political expression that’s even a whiff outside of the grand narratives of “born this way” “it get’s better” #samelove etc etc is totally demented, not to mention tedious to the extreme.
I think when she says it’s a “huge problem” among gay men I think she may be referring to the permissiveness around the expression of misogyny amongst gay men, more so than other demographics. I think her use of imagery is a bit hyperbolic but she has a valid point, and not exactly a new one, but it seems almost revelatory because it’s rarely expressed in the mainstream media.
Agreed
She is not completely wrong – but she is far from completely right! Firstly, she is mixing up culture and human rights. Just becasue the gay community and our culture has issues with body image drug use doesn’t mean that we don’t care about other equality issues! Secondly, the fight for gay equality is far from over, we are not on the cusp of having everything we are fighting for – we don’t even have equality before the law let alone equality in society! Thirdly, what she says could equally be said about women – women have more equality before the law then homosexuals, and im sure that there are many women out there who don’t give a rats arse about gay rights as there probably are some gay men out there who don’t care about women’s rights. Fourthly, I don’t know one single gay person that I would call a misogynist – ofcourse some might exist but most gay people I know actually fight more for the equal rights of others than the heterosexual people I know. Finally, the interesting thing about homosexuality is that it both transcends masculinity and reinforces it. It transcends masculinity by breaking the gender binary code and breaking heteronormativity. But at the same time it reinforces masculinity by idealising the hemeonic male figure – hence the desire to have a great male body and dance in speedos on a float!
She is talking about the gay culture not every single individual. The gay culture is one of fat shaming, looking down on others, drug taking and self-insularism. She’s spot on. That’s not saying gays are bad people- just that the prevalent culture in the community has turned shallow and vapid. Having said that- I often see gays championing the rights of other minorities so maybe it’s a case of Rose not knowing the right guys
Bullshit
Give me a world full of gay men & lesbians any day.
