Female sailors share historic kiss

A US sailor has kissed her female partner in the traditional ‘homecoming kiss’ after returning from 80 days at sea.

In a first since the repeal of the US military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ (DADT) policy, Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta shared the kiss with Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell to loud cheers from the crowd.

The coveted kiss is part of Navy tradition which Gaeta, 23, won in a raffle.

“They had a raffle for the first kiss, it was a dollar a ticket, I bought 50 tickets and they pulled my name… and surprisingly I won,” she told The Virginian-Pilot.

The DADT policy, which was was overturned in September this year, forced gay and lesbian military personnel to hide their sexuality or risk expulsion.

“It’s nice to be able to be myself,” Gaeta said.
