Finnish responsibility

The Director General of Finland’s Migration Department, Penti Visanen, told national broadcaster YLE that responsibility fell on Finland if gay asylum seekers are harmed when they are sent back to their countries of origin.

He made the comments after an EU-funded report showed that in recent years Finland had deported 10 gay refugees to countries where they could receive harsh punishments because of their sexuality.

However, Visanen said officials were becoming increasingly aware of the issues around these cases.
