Fundraising with fashion

JOY 94.9 presenter Steve Tom will tie his passion for youth homelessness with his flair for fashion to raise much needed funds in June.

Tom, known as ‘Stevie T Toms’ on air, will sport a new bow tie every day from June 1 – 21 to raise money for Open Family Australia’s 21 Challenge.

This is the second year Tom has participated in the fundraiser. Last year he worked with Melbourne milliners to don a new hat every day.

The 23-year-old said the issue of youth homelessness was close to his heart.

“The suicide rates are at an all-time high and homelessness plays into suicide like you wouldn’t believe,” Tom said.

A 2000 report by the National Youth Coalition for Housing found 53 percent of homeless youth had attempted suicide.

“There’s such a need for people to help as much as they can,” he said.

His target last year was $1000 which he exceeded. He has doubled it for this year.

So far Tom has raised more than half of his goal of $2000.

He said he had even attracted donations from TV shows such as Channel Ten’s The Renovators and Channel Nine’s The Block.

Open Family Australia provides an outreach service for homeless youth aged between 12-25 years in Victoria and NSW.

Catch Tom on Friday afternoons for Fabulous Fridays on JOY 94.9 FM.
