After becoming a YouTube sensation in the lead up to the ALP National Conference in November 2011, GetUp! Australia’s ad “It’s Time” may soon play a part in the upcoming US elections.

The It’s Time/Marriage Equality (ITME) lobby group have received permission to use the GetUp! ad in the US and are attempting to raise funds to have it broadcast across some of the country’s major networks, including CNN, Fox News, NBC and ESPN.

With US President Barack Obama having declared his support for same-sex marriage earlier this year and a number of gay marriage state ballot measures up for a vote in November, ITME believe that now is the perfect time to spread awareness and encourage a national conversation on the topic.

Partnering with fundraising platform Social Teeth, ITME is attempting to raise the $50,000 required to have the ad aired. The group is currently sitting on $585 of their goal and have opened up contributions until September 25.

“There’s never been a more important time to speak up, with the issue being hotly debated and historic marriage equality ballot initiatives set to be voted on this November,” the group states on its fundraising page.

“Our target audience consists of individuals that remain undecided or apathetic on the issue. We aim to promote a conversation about the universal themes of love and commitment.”

GetUp!’s ad (below) has had more than 6.5 million views on Youtube.
