2007 kicks off in style

A series of sell-out dance parties and a harbourside performance by the cast of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert were among the highlights as gay and lesbian Sydney welcomed 2007 this week.

Oxford Street hosted some of the most popular New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day events. About 600 people saw in the new year at Midnight Shift Club’s sold-out Evolve party. Around 500 punters were at the Shift’s leather party Indulgence the following day.

It was a good crowd, very busy, Midnight Shift assistant general manager Michael Prosser told Sydney Star Observer.

I was surprised at the amount last night [on 1 January].

Arq saw good crowds at its United NYE trance event on New Year’s Eve, and revellers at the venue’s New Year’s Day Night dance party on 1 January partied well into Tuesday.

New Year’s Day party Toybox sold out, with an estimated 4,000 revellers partying to DJs including Matt Steer and Luke Leal at the Hordern Pavilion. The Hawaii-themed Homesexual party on 1 January was also a sell-out, attracting about 2,100 people to Darling Harbour.

Some mainstream New Year’s Eve events also had a gay flavour, not least lord mayor Clover Moore’s lavish New Year’s Eve party at the Sydney Opera House, where cast members of hit musical Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert were among celebrity performers.

Elsewhere, Sydney’s gay and lesbian partygoers saw in 2007 peacefully. A NSW Police spokesperson said there were no reports of homophobic violence in the inner city.
