Argent book out now

A new book by Parent and Friends of Lesbians and Gays national spokeswoman Shelley Argent describes how the author went from being a suburban housewife to one of Australia’s most prominent advocates for gay equality and acceptance.
Opening the Door: A Mother’s Journey When Her Son Comes Out, is one of the first books published in Australia about the challenges faced by a parent of a gay son.
In another first, Opening the Door also includes other parents’ stories and a guide for parents coming to terms with gay or lesbian children.
Shelley said she wrote the book because parents need to feel they are not alone.
“If just one parent picks up this book and gets something out of it, it will have been worth it,” she said.
“I’ve met parents who say, ‘I’m glad you’re doing all that stuff because I never could’.
“But that’s what I felt once too. By writing the book I wanted to show that we can all make a difference.”
