Convicts win the inaugural Andrew Purchas Cup

The spirit of rugby was the big winner at the inaugural Purchas Cup match in Melbourne at the weekend.

The cup, a rugby friendly between the Sydney Convicts and the newly formed Melbourne chargers, was played at Footscray RFC.

Although the more seasoned Convicts accounted easily for their Melbourne colleagues –  some of whom accompanied them to the recent Bingham Cup defence in America – the 68-0 scoreline didn’t really reflect the challenge or intention of the match.

The Convicts are now awaiting the outcome of their bid to host the 2010 Bingham Cup competition. An announcement is expected before the end of the month.
