Defence stands up for same-sex equality

A review of Australian Defence Force superannuation schemes has recommended a new system that recognises same-sex and interdependent relationships.

The Review Team believes the new scheme should reflect contemporary practice and recognise interdependent relationships. It does not consider that the unique nature of military service would justify an exception, the report stated.

It also found the inclusion would only marginally affect cost to taxpayers, contradicting the statements made by the previous Howard government, which initiated the review.

Defence Science and Personnel Minister Warren Snowdon invited interested parties to submit comments on the recommendations before 31 March. Details and feedback options are available at www.defence.gov.au/militarysuperreview.

Defence superannuation laws were included in the 58 discriminatory laws identified by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. The Rudd Government is yet to give a timeframe for their removal.
