Girl love
They’ve been considered the Australian version of the Russian pop group T.A.T.U. but She Is plans to standout out from this typecasting with their acoustic style of music.
After meeting at the JMC Academy in 2003, band members Kali (pictured right) and Lauren decided to team up for a musical affair that turned into something more.
There was a romance between us but unfortunately we broke up late last year after dating for three years, Lauren told Sydney Star Observer.
We are still so familiar with each other’s emotions and feelings. Sharing a stage with someone you love is really special.
Despite getting runners-up in the 2004 Pittwater Band Competition, the girls have played at venues such as The Roxbury in Glebe, Sydney’s Hard Rock Cafe, The Excelsior, the Seymour Centre and even joined the transsexual band Dreadcircus.
Their latest EP is a selection of songs which reflects the open spectrum of musical styles which She Is integrates into their song-writing.
Our first track is Mess, which is about love and not moving on with your life. Kali wrote the song when she went to England after we broke up. She said it’s not about me but I know that it is, she said.
Now we are best of friends but the strangest thing is how weird it isn’t. We are still so in tune with each other.
She Is will be launching their latest EP tonight, Thursday 17 May, with a two 45-minute sets at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown with special guests Peter Northcote and Doug Glanville.
What makes our act unique is that there are no acoustic duos out there in Australia who are lesbians, which adds great dynamics because we sing about real issues. Hopefully we can really make the music scene aware of us and get the GLBT community behind us.
Who knows if we get back together but at the moment we are happy playing in the band. We are still sharing our lives together.
She Is will be touring with Dreadcircus in July before they hit the festival circuit in Adelaide and at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.
