  1. Firstly, I admit that I’m not Mister Kirby’s biggest fan, yet it still seems strangely misplaced that a man of his social status and financial means should be the guest speaker for a legal centre that provides legal services to ‘disadvantaged people’. One would have to suggest that Mister Kirby is not someone who would have much firsthand knowledge of the struggles of the disadvantaged.

His connection to the legal world and human rights issues is well known and credited, yet perhaps it would be a nicer gesture from him if he didn’t just turn up to give a guest speech but offer a generous part of his recent Gruber Justice Prize – which totaled over US $100,000 – to the Inner City Legal Centre. This really would be putting his money where his mouth is and would be an impressive demonstration of the advantaged helping the disadvantaged.
