Lesbians getting man action

Lesbians and gay men aren’t quite the sexual strangers many had assumed.

More than a quarter of queer women recruited at GLBT events such as Fair Day reported having had sex with a man they knew to be gay or bisexual, and of those women a quarter had done so in the last six months.

ACON CEO Stevie Clayton’s report to the Sexual Health conference in Perth suggested this was more than just a case of strange bedfellows, it could also be a recipe for STI crossovers.

It is a commonly held belief that lesbians are at low or no risk of STIs regardless of their sexual practices. Consequently, many lesbians and their general practitioners make the assumption that lesbians do not need to be screened for STIs.

However, results from the 2006 and 2008 Sydney Women and Sexual Health survey raised the possibility that many lesbians may be exposed to STIs including HIV that are more common in the gay community, Clayton raised.
