Mary’s Place text consultation

Community members are invited by the City of Sydney to attend a November 10 consultation being held to decide the final wording of the text to be installed on the wall of Mary’s Place to accompany the already installed “Lamp for Mary” artwork.

A proposed text has been drafted by Michael Taussig, Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University- a renowned cultural commentator and poet.

It reads, “This is a lane with a name and a lamp in memory of the woman who survived being beaten and raped here. She happened to be lesbian. When the sun sets this lamp keeps vigil along with you who read this in silent meditation”

Lamp for Mary was created by artist Mikala Dwyer as a tribute to all women who have experienced violence and as sign of hope, lighting the way forward for equal rights for the GLBT community.
