Park designs on show

The City of Sydney has put plans for the reinvigoration of two inner city parks on exhibition to the public and is seeking your feedback.

Plans for Fitzroy Gardens, at the corner of Macleay St and Darlinghurst Rd, include a central open green space surrounded by intimate garden areas, improved paved areas, more seating, a new façade for the police station and more bike parking. The park’s iconic El Alamein fountain will remain untouched.

Plans for nearby Lawrence Hargrave Reserve include space for community gardens and fruit trees, with better pedestrian access to link foot traffic between the two parks.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the new designs would provide more open space, and a better pedestrian flow.

“Kings Cross has always been known for its vibrant cultural life and these parks need to be an extension of this character,” Moore said.

She said locals had told the city they wanted more seating for the parks, better connections with the surrounding streets, and for them to be safer and more attractive.

A model showing the proposed changes is on view at the Kings Cross Neighbourhood Service Centre, while artists’ impressions and plans are on the City of Sydney’s website.

Residents are invited to comment on proposals for both parks, but particularly Lawrence Hargrave Reserve where the city wants more feedback.
