Sista’s doing it for themselves

The Naked MC is Sydney’s newest hip-hop comedy, which tackles the issues of sexuality, femininity and race. If you imagine white tracksuits, -˜80s dance moves and amusing rap tunes, you have Sista She.

Sarah Ward aka Shelia MC EILA and Candy Bowers aka Rasheda EDA MC, met at a train station in 2002 when they were both verbally abused by a toothless hobo on the platform. The result was a comedy duo that has preformed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Mardi Gras.

The Naked MC is a revised version of their last production – with theatre-style performances.

Mardi Gras was excellent and I think that people who saw that show will see how different this show really is, Ward said.

We still have the hip-hop and dance but it’s more raw and intimate with monologues. There will be lots of improvisation as well.

Ward, 28, will also be using the show as a way of coming out to the world.

When I broke up with my long-term boyfriend I remember seeing lots of hot women in the crowd. Coming from a very straight background in the Sutherland Shire it never clicked to me, she said.

When we were performing at the Opera House, I commented that the group had a strong queer following and that I thought my character Sheila was gay.

A lot of my fans already knew I was gay before I did. I remember one looking up and smiling at me. After that night she became my girlfriend for two years and I fell in love.

The show is set in a boxing ring. In the first round the characters speak about the issues of love and sexuality. The second act centres on cultural identity and upbringing. The final act is about body image and how to love yourself.

The Naked MC is at The Old Fitz Theatre in Woolloomooloo until July 28. Tickets start at $20 and can be bought on 9294 4296.
