Swish swish Wha?

Do all gay men have it and straight boys miss out? I know many gay boys who don’t have it, but on the flip side I know hundreds of straight men who definitely weren’t in the queue when it was handed out. I am talking about that music thing, the swish, swish, BAM, swish, swish, BAM that seems to come out in most gay men.

The topic came up as I was dashing through the lounge room en route to the bathroom for a shower, Courtney Act on the lounge eating some sort of non-dairy sweet, Kylie’s live album blasting through the house. All of a sudden, on came her fabulous concert version of Locomotion and within an instant Courtney Act and I were hitting poses to the kitchen. It seems the music brought the showgirl out in us instantly. Granted neither of us is really a good yardstick when it comes to butch-ness. But it got us wondering if this type of put your hands in the air, and shake them like you just don’t care was in every man, or is it just seen a lot more in the gay community?

We have all been to either the Midnight Shift or Stonewall when a popular song is fired up by the DJ. Instantly there are shrills of appreciation followed by some hardcore movement either on the dancefloor, the stage or just at the bar. I can hear you from here already saying that’s just the young kids, but I have seen many an older gent jump with excitement when a Pointer Sisters track is played, or shimmy around the bar as a little Chain Reaction is blasted through the venue. But what about all those butch straight boys? Are they able to let it out? Well, it seems they can, sort of -¦

I recently took my Italian friend to Priscilla down at Star City. As usual it was fabulous, with the numerous changes that have actually given the whole show a brand new flow. But during the performance I noticed many husbands, who had quite obviously been dragged along by their wives, slip into that hands in the air mode. As you can imagine, the wives were having a hoot, dancing and clapping, but every now and again you would see a couple of shoulder actions or a pout of the lips by the husband. It seems it is actually in a lot of straight boys as well -“ just programmed not to come out in public. A couple of times I just wanted to jump up and take their hands and spin them around and let everyone know, he too loves the nightlife and really wants to boogie. I guess it is in every man, so let it out. I say. Just make sure you are ready for what happens when you do.
