THE SSO A-Z GUIDE TO QUEER SYDNEY

J IS FOR

Judgement Bar If you’re after a schnitzel but are too drunk to stagger down the hill to Darlo, you’ll probably manage to make it as far as upstairs at the Court House Hotel, the resolutely non-gay enclave in the gayest spot in Sydney.

Actually, that’s a little unfair, as the Judgement Bar is a favourite late-night location for gay and straight hell-raisers alike.

But it’s had its moments. During the Gay Games in 2002 it became a resting place for locals who found themselves all-gayed out, but still wanted to be able to look down and catch a glimpse of gay rollerskaters or the passing pink throng.

After all, the best thing about the ‘Bar -“ after the cheap, tasty food (in the day) and cheap, tasty beer (at night), and long, long hours -“ is the view down to the ghetto below.

One thing is certain, you know you’ve had a big night when you find yourself at the Judgo.

Julia Gillard We gays are obsessed with hair, and that’s no secret. But even the Star staff were astounded by the amount of attention paid to Labor’s deputy leader Julia Gillard’s orange ‘do, when she became the ALP’s shining female star last year.

Equally astounding, we thought, was the attention paid to the fact that she didn’t have heaps of crap on her kitchen benches. Hadn’t anyone heard of minimalism? Any house-proud Surry Hills bachelor would be thrilled with such clean lines, even if they could use a bit of a reno.

Anyway, we think Julia’s okay, red hair or no red hair, old cupboards or new.

She’s not at the top of our gay-friendly list, but she’s not at the bottom either, and we know she thinks values voting is a crock. She’s not a God-botherer and doesn’t seem to regard marriage as a sacred, fragile flower that needs to be protected. Sounds like our kind of woman.
