Queensland LNP MP supports marriage equality

CavallucciRobertoA Queensland Liberal National Party MP has become the latest in a steady flow of conservative political figures who have come out recently in support of marriage equality.

The member for Brisbane Central, Robert Cavallucci (pictured), stated his support for same-sex marriage on a community television show last month.

Appearing on Channel 31’s QTV, Cavallucci said that he had a progressive stance on the issue.

“I’m someone with particularly progressive views on marriage equality, so yes, I do support it.”

Cavallucci becomes the latest LNP/Coalition figure to come out in support of marriage equality, following NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell’s statement of support and calls for a conscience vote within the federal opposition. The Brisbane Central MP also joins the likes of fellow conservatives Perth’s MP Eleni Evangel and Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

When asked by host Michael James whether he knew of any other LNP ministers or MPs that were in favour of marriage equality, Cavallucci declined to speak on behalf of his fellow party members, saying that the LNP was a party of diverse opinions and backgrounds.

“Not every electorate is like the inner city of Brisbane, which I represent,” he replied.

“Some of us have particular views and some of us have opposing views.”

Cavallucci was also asked if he supported same-sex adoption rights to which the MP stated he would like to see changes to adoption laws to allow easier access and rights for gay couples.

“In line with my previous comment [support for marriage equality], yes.”

“If you’re after my personal point of view, I think there are elements of [adoption laws] that could be changed.”
