Geelong Council to host Australia’s first commercial showing of Case Against 8
GEELONG Council will host the nation’s first commercial showing of The Case Against 8 at Readings Cinemas in Waurn Ponds on Monday night.
The film gives a behind-the-scenes look inside the case to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage.
The council and the Geelong Marriage Equality Group are supporting the screening, and Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson will launch the film.
Councillor Jan Farrell said it was a great coup for the region.
“Marriage equality is a human rights issue and our council has taken a public stand having unanimously voted to support marriage equality in July,” she said.
The Geelong Marriage Equality Group will also host a stand at the Waterfront Market from 10am to 3pm on Sunday at Steampacket Gardens.
Australian Marriage Equality national director Rodney Croome and deputy director Ivan Hinton-Teoh will be there to meet with people and answer any questions.
Farrell encouraged members of the public to attend the events.
“It’s an issue I’m very passionate about and I’m excited to have such prominent figures in the push for marriage equality here in Geelong,” she said.
“I believe we’re making fantastic progress on a local level in boosting awareness and helping influence change.”
