Positive pedallers push off

The City of Sydney launched Australia’s first Positive Pedaller Day on Tuesday 30 November, with a bike ride to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for people living with HIV.

Founded in California in 1996, the initiative has since spread to many cities across the US, and is about ‘promoting an inclusive and harmonious society through bicycle-related activities’.

“Group bike riding is a great way to socialise, stay healthy and explore our beautiful city. I hope that Positive Pedaller Day will inspire and empower people living with HIV and their supporters,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

Barrister Steven Berveling is among the riders taking part.

“When I got HIV in 1996, I stopped cycling the very activity that I loved so very much. At that time I was scared that if I crashed, I would not receive the necessary medical attention,” he said.

“I now know that those fears are totally ungrounded. I resumed riding four years ago and haven’t looked back.”
