Sailors hit harbour for Mardi Gras

The annual Mardi Gras Regatta, organised by the Australian Sailing and Cruising Club Inc (ASCC), sets sail on Saturday, February 11.

ASCC Commodore Neil Cossor said the LGBT sailing group provides sailing and boating opportunities for all levels of ability and welcomes both sail- and power-boat enthusiasts.

“We’re really looking forward to the regatta this year after the success and sunshine of the event last year,” he said.

“The regatta last year was a big success with male and female sailors racing together in mixed ability teams that provided close racing for everyone.”

The event is open to all abilities and ages and uses 10 identical three-crew Elliott keelboats that will be chartered from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Rushcutters Bay.

Teams from overseas and from interstate have competed in the event previously and the ASCC welcomes visitors to Sydney who would like to take part, whatever their sailing experience.

A social event and prize-giving for crews and their friends has been organised in the evening.
