It’s game on at Midsumma again this year as various sporting codes from Team Melbourne come together for the Midsumma Sports Day in Footscray. It kicks off this Saturday, January 19 at Footscray Park and the adjacent Victoria University in Footscray with more than 10 different sports on offer to choose from.
The free event welcomes newcomers and experienced athletes alike to try out the wide array of sports run by LGBTI teams from rugby union to ultimate frisbee.
The Melbourne Chargers gay rugby team will be running sessions to introduce people to the sport, as will the Melbourne Rovers soccer team.
There are a number of water-based events such as rowing sessions with the Argonauts, swimming with the Glamourhead Sharks and water polo rounds with the Melbourne Surge.
Running, cycling, volleyball, tennis, badminton, dancing and ultimate frisbee events will also be held.
“This is a great way for people within the GLBTI community who have ever been interested in participating in sport to come along and give it a go,” Team Melbourne president Malcolm Campbell said.
“Melbourne’s GLBTIQ sporting groups will be hosting a variety of sessions designed to give people a taste of what their particular sports are about.”
“The facilities are fantastic,” Campbell said “they allow us to cater for more sports than last year, in particular we have access to the Maribyrnong River which will allow the Argonauts rowing crew to join us.”
The Midsumma Sports Day runs 9am-4pm and will have a BBQ lunch available.
