If you think you have been exposed to HIV, regardless of the circumstances, then PEP is something that can prevent you becoming infected. PEP is a course of anti-HIV medications taken over a four week period. For PEP to work it needs to be started as soon as possible after exposure – and definitely within 72 hours. PEP can be easily accessed through the accident and emergency department of your local hospital or at your local sexual health clinic. There is a 24 hour, 1800 information line also available. This line provides comprehensive information about PEP including where to access PEP regardless of where you are. The number is 1800 737 669.
