Recently there has been some media coverage surrounding the availability Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). If you think you have been exposed to HIV, regardless of the circumstances, then PEP is something that can prevent you becoming infected. PEP is a course of anti-HIV medications taken over a four week period. For PEP to work it needs to be started as soon as possible after exposure – and definitely within 72 hours. PEP can be easily accessed through the accident and emergency department of your local hospital or at your local sexual health clinic. There is a 24 hour, 1800 information line also available. This line provides comprehensive information about PEP including where to access PEP regardless of where you are. The number is 1800 737 669.
