No longer suffering in silence
Physical theatre artist Paolo Morrison debuts a brave new work as part of the Sydney Fringe this month. The Dysfunctional Project is an unflinchingly honest look at the taboo topic of male sexual dysfunction — specifically, the psychological toll it takes on those who suffer from it.
“Overall, I’m encouraging men not to suffer in silence. Through research and from my own personal experience, I know it’s something people try to hide and ignore. It’s like a curse you’re quietly hoping will be broken,” Morrison told the Star Observer.
The performer takes on five different characters in the course of the show, each battling the same problem. Main character Paul is living in shame and denial about his sexual dysfunction until he encounters four other ‘broken men’ while waiting for his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.
“They all share their stories and slowly encourage Paul to come out about the fact he’s suffering from this problem,” Morrison said.
While he acknowledged the sensitive nature of the subject matter, Morrison said he was careful to include a few light touches in the show.
“It’s serious, but I also want to make people laugh. If you can laugh about your problem and find humour in it, I think you’ll be able to deal with it in a much healthier way.”
