Stephen Fry-approved gay love songs

None other than serial tweeter Stephen Fry described his music as “gloriously gay, sweetly romantic and wonderfully touching”. Now, following the success of his debut single, Football Song, young British singer-songwriter Matt Fishel is back with his second single, The First Time, available on iTunes.

The sweet folk-rock song about young same-sex love comes with a stunning video, shot in Buenos Aires in collaboration with award-winning Argentine director Alexis Dos Santos, whose films include Glue and Unmade Beds. In it, actors Juan Gabriel Miño and Ronan Nuñez play rebellious teenage friends whose day of drinking, smoking and stealing ends with an unexpected sunset kiss on a beach.

“My vision has always been to tell my stories to an audience in a candid and truthful way; to be honest and open about sexuality and to hopefully inspire people who may not have heard songs written from a gay man’s perspective in this particular genre of music,” Fishel said.

The First Time has also been reworked by Dutch DJ/producer and frequent RuPaul collaborator Matt Pop, whose PWL-inspired remixes, released alongside the single, transform the song into an ’80s club anthem.

Meanwhile, Fishel’s hard at work with producer Mark Crew recording his debut solo album, due for release in early 2012, which he promises will continue his trademark lyrical honesty and deal with “issues surrounding gay life, relationships and experiences”.
