Queer workplace study launched

workplace discrimination webA new study will explore how sexual orientation affects the experiences of LGBTI people in the workplace.

Commissioned by researchers at the University of Wollongong’s Sydney Business School, the research will examine the prevalence of heterosexism in the Australian labour market by asking respondents a range of questions on their experiences coming out as gay to workmates, the responsiveness of work environments to sexual diversity, and instances of homophobic workplace bullying.

Director of Allied Health at St John of God Health Care, Ian Smith, said the study had the potential to have real-world impact on working LGBTI people.

“The aim is not only to ensure that workplaces have proper equal employment opportunity policies in place, but to actively guarantee that all employees are aware of policies and procedures and to provide a workspace that’s free from sexuality and sexual identity discrimination,” Smith said.
