Tributes have begun flowing for Heroes, Nashville and Scream star Hayden Panettiere, who has died aged 36.

Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death in a statement released on Sunday.

Family confirm the sudden death of Hayden Panettiere

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said.

“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

The family has requested privacy while it processes the “unimaginable loss”; a cause of death has not been announced.

Among the first of Panettiere’s colleagues to publicly remember her was Scream VI co-star Melissa Barrera, who shared a short tribute to the star on Instagram, writing “Rest in peace sweet Hayden.”

Fans noted that Panettiere had previously defended Barrera after she was controversially dismissed from the horror franchise.

Iconic actress Viola Davis shared a touching message online, writing, “What an amazing talent you were….so gifted. Julius and I loved working with you….an old, wise soul with such a deep heart” in a post on Instagram.

Messages of shock and grief have also flooded social media from viewers who grew up with Panettiere’s performances. Many recalled her career defining role as indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes, whose “Save the cheerleader, save the world” storyline made her one of television’s most recognisable young stars.

Panettiere later earned two Golden Globe nominations for playing troubled country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Her other credits included Remember the Titans, Bring It On: All or Nothing, I Love You, Beth Cooper and two Scream films.

In the months before her death, Panettiere had begun speaking more about her life. While promoting her memoir in May this year, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she publicly came out as bisexual and discussed the pressure to appear “perfect”, as well as her experiences of child stardom, addiction, postpartum depression and abusive relationships.

She also wrote about the devastating 2023 death of her younger brother, Jansen, saying she felt as though she had lost “half of my soul”.

Panettiere is survived by her 11 year old daughter, Kaya, and her parents. She would have turned 37 on August 21.
