Bert ‘not gay’

Bert ‘not gay’

The creators of global kids television show Sesame Street have denied claims Bert is about to out himself.

Speculation has been rife for the last week that Bert, who has lived with Ernie for more than 30 years, was poised to come out of the closet after a Tweet seemed to imply he was gay.

“Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T’s? The only difference is mine is a little more ‘mo,’ a little less ‘hawk’,” the Tweet read.

To some the comment was just a cute quip about hairstyles, but to others, “mo” was short for “homo” and this was Bert’s way of coming out at the perfect time.

But Ellen Lewis from production company Sesame Workshop says there is no truth in the speculation.

“Our writer had no intention of implying anything by the tweet, no agenda and no idea that it would be interpreted any other way except that the ‘A-Team’ movie was out and Bert has, like, a mini-mohawk, so her intention was just a fun way to split up the word just to imply that his hairstyle is a shorter derivative of a longer Mohawk that Mr. T in the A-team wore,” Lewis told FoxNews.com.

But website Gunaxin thinks it is time Bert and Ernie came clean as a way of educating young people about the gay community.

What do you think? Are Bert and Ernie gay? And should they come out of the closet? Do you even care? Should they be the Chiefs of Parade at next year’s Mardi Gras? Or perhaps perform at the after party?

  1. Considering Mr Snuffleupacus’s parents got a divorce (implying heterosexuality), surely it’s time that that these “puppets” had more diversity. They can’t use the “puppets don’t have a sexuality” line any longer.

Just like the divorce storyline was a way to include and educate people about divorce, same too with homosexuality.

  2. As Margaret Cho said after the religious right nutters accused Spongebob Squarepants of being gay, “it’s just a fuckin’ sponge”. Indeed. Who cares.

  3. God yes, that would be amazing.
It may not have been the intention for Bert and Ernie to be gay but I truly think it is time that they just write the characters as being gay, they don’t even need to change anything, just keep the show going the way it is.

I think it would be best if they just didn’t state they were gay but instead let the kids work it out for themselves and maybe use Bert and Ernie to talk about kids who do have 2 dads or 2 mums.

Could be an amazing step forward for acceptance.
