Doco takes on the church

Whether you are religious or not, the multi-award-winning For the Bible Tells Me So is a must-see for anyone struggling with the concept of coming out, or for parents struggling to come to terms with their children’s sexuality.

The documentary, which centres on the stories of five American Christian families as they come to terms with a gay child, will be screened next Friday at a free session hosted by gay Christian group Freedom2b[e].

Featuring input from religious leaders Desmond Tutu and the Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg as well as various other intellectual figures, For The Bible Tells Me So offers great insight and guidance for anyone attempting to reconcile their faith with their sexuality.

Freedom2b[e] spokesperson Anthony Venn-Brown said it is an important film that successfully challenges the long-held homophobic views of the church.

It tells the stories of real people and the damaging impact an uneducated view of homosexuality has had. There are also stories of resolution, he said.

For many traditional Christians, homosexuality is an issue, but it isn’t -¦ it’s people. Over the last two decades there has been substantial growth in the gay Christian movement and welcoming churches, but this film particularly helps those who are still isolated to know that they are not alone.
