Drag school anyone?

Drag school anyone?

School doesn’t have to be all about reading, writing and arithmetic.

One Daylesford resident is determined to re-write the rule book, with a much more exciting area of study — drag.

Performer and drag tutor Rei Alphonso is hoping to get her unique drama education progam — Drag School — up and running in the Daylesford area to educate young people in the art of drag.

Aimed specifically at GLBTIQ youth, the program uses drag to explore issues of gender identity and sexuality through a series of interactive ‘playshops’.

Drag School participants learn the tricks of costuming and performance and have a chance to play with gender in a safe environment.

To get Drag School up and running, Daylesford art gallery Can’t think Straight is holding a photographic exhibition fundraiser in October and November to help raise money for the self-funded program. Prints from inaugural graduates will be on sale with all proceeds going to support Drag School’s regional tour.

Visitors to Daylesford can donate to the Drag School fundraiser and check out work from the next generation of drag kings and queens from October 1 – November 30.
