PFLAG up for awards

Melbourne Greens Deputy Lord Mayoral aspirant Kathleen Maltzahn and PFLAG national spokeswoman Shelley Argent have been nominated for Australian Human Rights Commission awards.

Maltzahn has been shortlisted for a 2008 Human Rights Literary Non-Fiction Award for her book Trafficked.

The book documents the experience of women caught up in human trafficking, lifting the lid on the sex industry in Australia.

It also covers the 2003 coronial inquiry into Puongtong Simaplee’s death at Villawood Detention Centre.
Maltzahn said she was thrilled to be nominated for the award.

It’s really exciting to be nominated with all those books, she told Sydney Star Observer.

I think that trafficking is an important human rights issue and how very important campaigning can be to change things.

Shelley Argent has been nominated for an Individual Community Award and PFLAG Brisbane has been nominated for Organisation Community Award.

This year the awards celebrate the 60th annivers-ary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948.

Shortlists were drawn up from around 220 nominations submitted for two human rights medals and seven award categories.

Winners will be announced in Sydney on International Human Rights Day, December 10.
