BEST-selling author JK Rowling has publicly slammed the controversial Westboro Baptist Church (WPC) after they challenged a social media movement to have fictional wizards Dumbledore of her Harry Potter series and Lord Of The Rings’ Gandalf married in Ireland after the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

After she tweeted a meme (above) celebrating the change in equality laws in Ireland, WPC went on the attack and claimed they would picket the fictional wedding ceremony.

As a long standing advocate for LGBTI rights, Rowling defended the union of the fictional characters:
.@WBCsigns Alas, the sheer awesomeness of such a union in such a place would blow your tiny bigoted minds out of your thick sloping skulls.

She further cited that people of influence need to speak out against homophobic hate speech.
I don’t care about WBC. I think it’s important that scared gay kids who aren’t out yet see hate speech challenged. https://t.co/XumjDmEjuw

This is not the first time Rowling has stepped forward in support of gay rights:

@jk_rowling it’s safe to assume that Hogwarts had a variety of people and I like to think it’s a safe place for LGBT students
