Mardi Gras history online

The online Dictionary of Sydney is highlighting its wealth of LGBTI resources this Mardi Gras season.

Dictionary entries include articles on the history of the Sydney Mardi Gras parade, a history of same-sex relationships between women in Sydney from before European contact to the present, a look at the history of gay men in Sydney from colonisation to the present which includes the first and last men to be hanged in Sydney for sodomy, an article on Sydney’s drag scene, and entries on many of Sydney’s LGBTI community identities, organisations and institutions.

The dictionary also includes oral histories from the City of Sydney collection about the first Mardi Gras, which began as a protest and descended into a riot by police when they attacked the marchers, and has images from Sydney photographers including William Yang and Rennie Ellis.

The dictionary aims to produce a new kind of history of Sydney — online, growing and changing, covering every aspect of human life in the greater Sydney area from the arrival of the first people to the present.

The Dictionary of Sydney is a project of the Dictionary of Sydney Trust and is supported by the City of Sydney and the Australian Research Council.
