Bear Pride: Bears on film
Looking for men, masculinity and a movie matinee? Want it hosted at the intimate Govinda’s movie room, best known for its casual cushioned seating?
Bear Pride 2011 is delivering this year.
The curtain opens on the afternoon double feature with the recently released short The Colonel’s Outing (2011 NZ, 17 mins).
Two old war veterans find love in a nursing home – but why is matron so bothered by their blossoming relationship?
It will be followed by the fascinating investigation of gay men and masculinity in the documentary The Butch Factor (2009 USA, 88 mins) which mixes interviews with entertaining eye candy in a fast-paced testosterone tour from the Castro clone culture of the 1970s to today’s bear movement and blows the lid off old stereotypes.
Showcasing a strapping selection of interviewees including muscle men, rodeo riders, rugby players and cops – the men speak candidly on a range of topics from homophobia to metrosexuality to embracing effeminacy as they reveal what it means to be a gay man today.
After the screening, the bears and their friends will head down nearby Victoria St for a little coffee and cake.
