Bible views challenged

Community members were encouraged to rethink how the scriptures really considered LGBTI people at a Melbourne workshop this month.

About 60 people attended A Different Conversation in Fitzroy on September 1 to talk out theology and the LGBTI community.

St Martin’s Community Church minister Cath McKinney co-organised the event.

McKinney told the Star Observer there were many Christians who were upset at the Australian Christian Lobby for speaking on behalf of the Church with their “more conservative views”.

“I’m part of the church that thinks quite differently,” McKinney said.
“It really came out of [wanting] to provide a safe space where that dialogue could be held.”

McKinney said people had been invited to raise their questions but not their accusations or insults.

McKinney said the workshop encouraged people revisit the scriptures, in particular the New Testament in the Bible, with a more compassionate view.

St Martin’s Community Church is an independent, non-denominational church.
