Country star fights marriage ban
Openly gay country music star Chely Wright is crusading against a potential same-sex marriage ban in the US state of North Carolina.
Wright, who married her long-time girlfriend, activist Lauren Blitzer, in August, has given her support to the marriage equality activists who are staging rallies in the state this week.
The state legislature passed a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage – and civil unions – across the state on Monday, which the citizens of North Carolina will vote on in May next year.
North Carolina is currently the only southern American state without a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.
“It is my opinion that this is a cynical, unnecessary political move to get out the conservative vote,” Wright said in an interview with MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts.
“It’s an unfair act being leveled against a lot of North Carolinians who are doing their best to just live their lives. I might add that the laws that exist in North Carolina right now prohibit same-sex marriage, so this is essentially putting a dead bolt lock on an already locked door.”
