Dancing with the queers

Last night saw a whole new bunch of celebrities hit the dance floor on the American version of Dancing with the Stars, for what may possibly be, the queerest season ever.

In the mix this round is Queer Eye star Carson Kressley, gay icon Ricki Lake, and the contestant met with the most controversy, Chaz Bono.

Chaz is the son of former pop duo Sonny and Cher, which pretty much makes him celebrity royalty, however, his involvement in the light-hearted show has caused significant uproar from conservative elements in the US.

Various parenting, religious and political activists have called for a boycott of the show.

Chaz may very well be the first transgender man to be spotlighted on such a highly rated program, but seems like he’s not letting the controversy ruin his time on DWTS.

He says he was actually surprised at the amount of positive tweets he received before his debut on the dance floor, so many he just couldn’t get through them all.

The judges also spoke highly of his performance, with judge Carrie Ann Inaba telling Bono: “I think people have been waiting all night to see you Chaz and you did not disappoint. You can dance!”

It remains to be seen who will take home the sequined disco ball this year, but it is hard not to feel that when pop queen Sophie Ellis-Bextor sang “It’s murder on the dance floor” she was singing about the disco smack down of adored LGBT icons.

Watch Chaz and dance partner Lacey Schwimmer in their first fiery performance.
