Ellen fights back after boycott threat

Ellen DeGeneres has used her opening monologue during today’s episode of her chat show to denounce a conservative group threatening to boycott a US department store that has hired her as a spokeswoman.

Following the Proposition 8 court decision Tuesday (which originally banned gay marriage in California), Degeneres shared her excitement over the ruling and blasted conservative group One Million Moms for demanding JCPenney end its partnership with her.

“There’s a group called One Million Moms that isn’t happy [the partnership],” DeGeneres said.

“And normally, I try not to pay attention to my haters—but this time I’d like to talk about it, because my haters are my motivators.”

One Million Moms issued a statement following the announcement of the DeGeneres/JCPenney campaign, saying it will lose customers.

“By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JCPenney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years,” the statement read.

DeGeneres said she was glad JCPenney didn’t back down.

“They wanted to get me fired, and I’m proud and happy to say that JCPenney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson,” she said.
