Madonna still number one

Proving that she still has what it takes to stay at the top, long-time Queen of Pop Madonna is celebrating the news that her MDNA world tour has been declared the highest-grossing tour of 2012.

Performing a mammoth run of 72 sold-out shows running from November 2011 to November 2012, Billboard magazine announced that her tour has grossed over $228 million.

Bruce Springsteen who has been touring with the E Street band came second with almost $200 million.

More than 1.6 million people have seen the tour that kicked off in Israel and ended in Argentina. However, Australian audiences missed out on the MDNA world tour and the singer faced a wave of criticism after announcing that she was cancelling the Australian leg in a personal video posted to YouTube.

Madonna and the tour attracted more controversy when she bared her buttocks to raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy at one date and writing a message of support for US President Barack Obama on her back at another.

She was also criticised by anti-gun campaigners for brandishing imitation weapons and Russian anti-gay activists when she spoke out for LGBTI rights during a Moscow performance.
