Milli Vanilli – the movie?

And the award for 2011’s most unexpected biopic goes to Milli Vanilli -the movie.

According to reports, acclaimed German director Florian Gallenberger has signed on to helm a film based on the rise and fall of disgraced lip-synching ’80s pop duo Milli Vanilli.

The band, a side project for Boney M producer Frank Farian, scored a handful of huge hits in the late ’80s including three number ones – Baby Don’t Forget My Number, Girl I’m Gonna Miss You and Blame It on the Rain (below) – and even landed a Grammy for Best New Talent in 1990.

Shortly thereafter the fairytale began to crumble when it was revealed that Morvan and Pilatus didn’t actually sing on their record but were simply models hired to front the project.

The boys begged Farian to get into the studio to make an album with their own voices, but Pilatus died of a drug overdose just before they could promote it and prove once and for all that they had more going for them than amazing hair.

Sounds like the plot of a future Oscar contender to me!
