Oz star backs gay marriage

The very sexy Christopher Meloni, star of cult prison drama OZ and Law & Order: SVU has joined the fight for marriage equality in New York by filming a video for the Human Rights Campaign.

The 50-year-old actor begins the clip by saying he believes in love, family and fairness before urging New Yorkers to support gay marriage.

“Already five states and the District of Columbia have marriage equality,” he tells viewers. “It’s time for New York to lead again.”

Listen to Christopher’s message:

The video is timely given the recent findings of a Siena Research Institute poll, which indicate record levels of support for marriage equality among New York voters – 58% are for it, while 36% of the sample group were against it.

“With support for equality at a record high 58% in the state, we’re confident that all loving, committed couples will soon be able to marry the person that they love,” said Brian Ellner, senior strategist for the Human Rights Campaign.

Christopher isn’t the first celebrity to lend his voice to the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign – Joan Rivers, Whoopi Goldberg, Lucy Liu, Julianne Moore and Moby have all filmed similar videos – but the actor is a fitting spokesman given his career making role as bisexual inmate in Oz.

Check out some of the highlights from his stint in the series below. We’d be surprised if you watch them just once!
