Tabatha tells almost all

Australian hairdresser turned American television personality Tabatha Coffey has opened up about coming out and her sexuality in a new memoir called It’s Not Really About The Hair – just don’t ask her to discuss her partner.

The 43-year-old stylist, who first came to attention on reality show Shear Genius – think X Factor for hairdressers – before landing her own gig as the host of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, rarely refers to her sexual orientation in public but decided to write about it after receiving emails from viewers.

It’s Not Really About The Hair probably isn’t the book that anyone expected me to write, but I was inspired by the emotional e-mails I get from fans,” she explains.

“I wanted to share some life lessons, especially in light of the recent bullying and gay teen suicides.”

One thing Tabatha refused to write about, however, is her partner of 12 years.

“I was honest and candid about everything else, but it was a personal choice to draw the line at that,” Coffey told The Advocate. “She’s incredibly private.”

“It’s enough, and it says something to everyone — gay and straight — just to be in a long-term relationship that works.”

Tabatha’s strong views on privacy haven’t stopped her voicing her support for gay rights issues.

“I don’t feel like I have to wave a flag in a parade, but I’m the first person to talk about equality,” she said.

“People with power need to stop hiding in closets.

“If one person can be comforted or encouraged by the fact that I’m out and successful, then it’s all worth it.”
