A former 60 Minutes producer-turned-independent filmmaker has released the trailer for his upcoming documentary on the mass firing of gay US federal employees in the 1950/60s.
Josh Howard’s The Lavender Scare is based on a book by David K. Johnson, and is expected to do the film festival circuit this fall.
in 1953, US President Eisenhower issued an executive order ordering the dismissal of all gays and lesbians employed by the US Government. The excuse was that gay people would be targets for blackmail and therefore likely to expose state secrets.
